Uncle Grant Wellons
Grant Elmer Wellons, “Uncle Grant” to my mom, was my grandfather’s brother. He was born on August 13, 1900 in Anderson and died February 3, 1968 in Anderson. The cause of death was bronchial pneumonia and cancer of the larynx. He was living at 821 E. 29th Street in Anderson prior to death. He was buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson.
I met Uncle Grant a few times, but do not remember much about him. He appears to have married 3 times.
He married Nellie Kramer from the Pendleton area on June 24, 1923. Nellie was born around 1902 according to census records during her childhood. Another Ancestry family tree has pictures of her from high school. She and Grant appear to have had a son, Robert K. Wellons. (She is listed in the 1930 census as the wife of Mr. Craig and Robert is listed as a step-son.)
At the 1940 census, Grant is married to Ruth (Mildred Omler). They live in Ward 3 of Anderson Township in Anderson, Indiana. The household consists of:
Grant 39
Ruth 34
Juanita R. 7
He is listed as a machinist at an auto parts factory, making $2,579 per year.
Ruth is listed as a typist at an auto parts factory, making $440 per year.
The 1943 city directory list Ruth and Grant living at 1905 W. 8th Street in Anderson. They divorced sometime between 1943 and 1949 as Grant married again that year.
Ruth was born in Kentucky in 1906. She was the daughter of Fred and Emma Omler. She died in Hartford City, in Blackford County, Indiana on December 16, 1983 at age 78. Her marriage status was “divorced” and the name on her birth certificate was Ruth M. Wellons. She had retired as a production worker at Guide Lamp Division of GM in Anderson.
Later in life, he married a third time. She was Ruby Mae Phillips and they had no children. Ruby was born March 10, 1900 in Hancock County and died August 18, 1969 in Anderson. They were married on March 26, 1949.
