Uncle Charles Wyant
Uncle Charles Beltred Wyant is the uncle, or rather my mom’s uncle, who I didn’t know about until I started doing family research. That was for two reasons. Firstly, he died just after I was born. Secondly, unlike the rest of the family, he stayed in Missouri most of his life. He was an older brother of my grandmother Bessie Ethel Wyant Wellons.
He was born on September 17, 1904 in Springfield, Missouri. He died on October 19, 1954 in Turlock, California and was buried in Modesto Citizens Cemetery in Modesto, CA.
In the 1910 census he was listed as “Beltred C. Wyant”, which I believe reverses the order of his names. He was 5 years old and all of his siblings except for Uncle Gordon were in the household of his parents. Gordon was born a year later.
In the 1920 census, he is a 15 year old living with his parents along with Jessie 19, Paul 17, and Mary 13. I’m not sure why the younger kids weren’t listed. They reported his occupation (at age 15!) as “teamster”.
The 1930 census lists him as the head of household at 136 Glenstone Court, a rental in Campbell, Missouri. He reported being married at age 18. He was a truck driver for an Ice Company.
Here’s the listing:
Charles B. 25
Julia 25
Charles 4
Edna 3
Emma J. 2
Julia was Julia Leroy Terhune and she was born on November 7, 1904 and died on September 14, 1939. She was the daughter of Charles and Ethel May Terhune who lived in Campbell, Missouri at the 1910 census when Julia was 7 years old. She was buried in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
In the 1938 City Directory he was living at 307 E. Locust, but in Springfield rather than Anderson.???
His WWII draft registration was done on February 15, 1943 when he was 37 years old. He reported his “Next of Kin” as Nancy Summers, age 37.
