Uncle Oscar Wellons

Oscar F. Wellons (no idea what the F stood for), was another brother of my grandfather, Ralph Wellons. “Uncle Oc”, pronounced “AWK”, was born in Anderson on January 25, 1915 and died in Anderson on June 5, 1993 of myeloblastic leukemia.

He was married to Mary L. Denver, who was born in 1919 and died in 1980.

Both are buried at Anderson Memorial Park. In fact, I can now say that most of my grandparents siblings are buried either at Maplewood Cemetery near Anderson College or in Anderson Memorial Park on the old Pendleton Pike north of the I-69 exit.

In the 1940 census we have:

Oscar 24 a boiler room fireman at Delco-Remy making $1,900 per year
Mary 21 a housewife
Jacqulin 3 (actually Jacqueline Sue; she has the prettiest name in the family!)

They live in White River Township in Hamilton County, but they reported recently moving from Anderson, Indiana. That may be connected to the fact that their second daughter, Shirley Marie, was born on May 6, 1940, just after the census was taken.

And the city directory shows that they lived with his oldest brother Branson at 2303 Locust Street in 1955. Kids and all. Who didn’t live with Uncle Branson at some point?

“Uncle Ock” had the neatest nickname in the family. I just remembered that my grandfather’s nickname was “Skip”.
